Transforming our water treatment plants into ‘energy hubs’
On 4th December, 2025, the French ResNRJwater
partners TE44 and EnR44 teams participated in the Loire Atlantique departmental
sanitation technical group: All authorities in waste water treatment in the
region Loire Atlantique met for a working session. This was a good opportunity
to share and present the ResNRJwater project: Nine European partners working
and exchanging ideas on a large-scale energy management and production project
in the water sector, covering flexibility, savings, grid support, electricity
and heat production, biogas, mapping of heat and electricity capacities.
For Loire Atlantique the ResNRJwater activities were presented:
Four pilot solar photovoltaic installation projects are to be built in 2026 in rural areas of Loire Atlantique: floating systems, pond shade structures, trackers and vertical bifacial systems. The energy will be consumed locally in the water sector or by other public services. The project will also enable the definition of an action plan and methodologies that can be replicated in other departments or in Europe for the deployment of photovoltaics on wastewater treatment plants.
